Greenfoot Energy Centre, Bedford, NS

In 2009, the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and Nustadia Recreation Inc. (Nustadia) entered into a long-term agreement to develop, build and operate a multi pad, multi-use recreation facility in Bedford, NS. The Greenfoot Energy Centre opened in the fall of 2010, approximately 12 months after construction commenced. This 160,000 SF facility includes four NHL sized ice surfaces, four beach volleyball courts, multi-purpose community space, meeting rooms, user group office space, a full-service food and beverage outlet overlooking 3 ice surfaces, a Cleve’s Source for Sports retail outlet, and a Subway Sandwich outlet.

This LEED equivalent facility incorporates many environmentally friendly and energy saving features such as natural lighting, radiant heating, waste heat recovery to heat the building and water and ice battery storage system for refrigeration energy efficiency and cooling.

The vision for the Greenfoot Energy Centre was to create a facility that was architecturally and programmatically a source of pride for all of HRM, providing quality services for the community, and generating sport tourism opportunities that benefit and promote the region. The 4-pad arena complex provides year-round recreation opportunities for youth and those who are still young at heart, attracts major events and provides an economic impact to HRM and is a first-class recreation destination.

The facility is proud to be home to the Bedford & District Minor Hockey Association (BDMHA), Atlantic Hockey Group, Metro Force West Girls Hockey Association, Bedford Skate Club, Sledge Hockey Nova Scotia, Bedford Barons Major Bantam, CP Allen High School Boys and Girls Hockey, IceMen Adult Hockey, NS Women’s Adult Hockey League and the Ice Jam Major Midget Hockey Tournament.
