William P. Wilder ’40 Arena & Sports Complex, Toronto, ON

Upper Canada College, ON

In 2005, Nustadia Recreation Inc. (Nustadia) was hired as the Development Managers for this impressive $18 M twin pad arena replacing an aging, single pad on the Upper Canada College campus in downtown Toronto. Nustadia provided the full range of project management services for this LEED Gold arena that encompasses many unique features, including urban design issues (historic building replication), restrictive site conditions, and a fully operating education facility. Nustadia’s services included business planning, project management, staffing, temporary service provision, marketing and sales for setting up the operations and facility programming.

One of the focus’ of the design was extensive adherence to the College’s “Green Master Plan”, including geothermal heat recovery tied to an eco-chill refrigeration system, which provides heat for the building, spectator seating, ice resurfacing and domestic hot water, ice melting and under floor heating, a gray water recovery system to flush toilets, waterless urinals and a Green Housekeeping Plan.

This facility not only provides the College with two ice surfaces, but also includes football, rugby, soccer and hockey locker rooms, an alumni lounge, increased spectator viewing and a spacious lobby. Other amenities include the pro shop, concession stand, wireless internet throughout the building, and the space and technological capability to host large meetings and presentations. Alongside the arena, the campus hosts a double court tennis bubble, an artificial turf field with demountable dome for winter use, two gymnasiums, baseball diamonds, a sport court, and several grass fields. Nustadia manages all these facilities as well as several spaces within in the main building at the school.
